The Four Human Endowments from Lance Hood's Personal Development Seminars

Depending on which anthropologist you follow, the genetic difference between a human being and our closest animal relative, the great apes, is 2% of our genetic code. Allow me to offer what I would describe as that 2% of DNA that separates us from the animals. Keep in mind that I am not an anthropologist.

As human beings with highly-developed brains, man (men and women) has a conscience, a will, an imagination and self-awareness. These four unique attributes comprise the 2% of DNA that separates us from all animals, including the "Great Apes."

Self awareness, is as it denotes, means becoming aware of yourself -- your limitations, emotionally and physically and your learning challenges. Awareness is the first step in the creation process. As you grow in self awareness, you will better understand why you feel what you feel and why you behave as you behave. That understanding then gives you the opportunity and freedom to change those things you would like to change about yourself and create the life you want. Anything that blocks your way to finding your soul purpose will be addressed and answered.

Take a look at your behavior patterns, your age, medications you are taking, substance abuse, diet, amount of sleep you are getting, unresolved issues that have festered for years, the influences of those you live near of with, people you are forced to work with, what makes you feel out of balance, your physical appearance such as overweight, etc.

Conscience is an universal trait. It's an internal compass that allows us to sense before we even contemplate acting in a way that may be contradictory to our "true north" values. No matter what people's religions, cultures, or backgrounds are, our goals all deal with the same human needs to succeed in life (occupation), in social groups (families) and in our educational.

The independent will in the context of effective self-management is usually not the dramatic, the visible, the once-in-a-lifetime, up-by-the-bootstraps effort that brings enduring success. It is our capacity to act based on principles rather than reacting based on emotions, moods, or circumstances. While environmental or genetic influences may be very powerful, they do not control us. We are "response-able, " meaning we are able to choose our response. In other words, if you are an effective manager of your self, your discipline comes from within; it is a function of your independent will. You become the follower of your own values.

Imagination makes it possible to experience a whole world inside the mind. It gives the ability to look at any situation from a different point of view, and enables one to mentally explore the past and the future.
