Emotional Intelligence
Emotional intelligence involves knowing how to deal with people, who acquire different characters, without knowing how to deal with people who are, rigid aggressive, self centered or those who exhibits dysfunctional behavior can be difficult and therefore leaders who are intelligent enough are required to be able to handle them. People believe that innate personality is highly connected with emotional intelligence; intelligence quotient is the most driving force in training and development industry. Emotional intelligence can be referred to as the product of personal competence and social competence, personal competence described as standard collective power of yourself awareness and self management skills.(Carter MC Namara, 1997)
Components of emotional intelligence
Self regulation-this is ability to think before you act or before taking any necessary steps towards somebody. One can also be in apposition to control and redirect disruptive moods and impulses. It includes; comfort with ambiguity, trustworthiness and integrity, openness change and self control.(Caudron, 1999)
Motivation-this is a strong drive that makes people to work beyond money and recognition. It involves great persistence and dedication towards achieving target goals and objectives set. In organization level it is having strong commitment and dedication to achieve the success.
Social skills-building good rapport between the people that you are relating with and working with brings about having strong social skills. Also building strong networks and having effectiveness in implementing change, persuasiveness, and having expertise in building team.
Empathy- this is a personality character that is associated with understanding emotional make up of other people. It involves ability to retain your talents, skills, cross cultural sensitivity and continuous provision of service to clients and customers.
Self awareness-it includes understanding of oneself, personal moods, self confidence, realistic self assessment, and self deprecating sense of humor.
Evaluation of my former manager on emotional intelligence.
The following questions will help in evaluation of manager's emotional intelligence;
- Do you provide frequent and regular opportunities for employees to voice their compliments?
- Have you been listening to your employees with 100% attention?
- Are you able to treat your members in terms of humility, respect, timely and in sense of humor?
- Do you publicly recognize your employees who are top performers and reward them?
- Have you been generating sense of ownership to your employees?(Goleman, 1998)
Application of emotional intelligence.
Effective application of emotion intelligent is necessary for creation of good relations between the leaders and employees. Leaders and managers in general must practice the technique of emotion intelligence to help the work hand in hand with each other and without causing any conflict. Managers should refrain from giving orders since this is considered disrespectful and destroy commitment and innovation. All employees should be provided with proper information concerning the whole organization. High values of standards must be used to explain a new policy that governs the organization. Finally it is important to let people use their brains to solve problems facing the company on their own. (Warren Bennis, 1994)
How organizations' promote emotion intelligent
- By transferring ownership for work to people who do the work.
- Developing individual capability and competence.
- By creating conditions that challenges everyone in the organization.
- Aligning organization structures in a way that clear message is sent and that promotes excellence in organization.
