Disaster Management - Handling Difficult People

It takes all kinds of people to make this world, and not everyone is as pleasant as you may want them to be. There are several junctures in life where you meet people who are far from likeable, but you still have to learn to deal with them and work around their idiosyncrasies. It can tell severely on the nerves, but there really is no way out.

Some of the difficult people in your life may include a spouse, parent or child. It may also manifest in the form of a boss or co worker. These are people you cannot disconnect from easily. The challenge of life lies in keeping your sanity while handling difficult people.

The first thing you need to understand is what makes them difficult. Is it something in you which triggers some resistant responses, or is it a uniform trait in them? Their behaviour could also be a response to some insecurity, problem or situation they are faced with. Understand the cause of their behaviour, and you will know better what to do or not to do to get them ruffled up.

Handling difficult people can be trying since it also affects your own behaviour and efficiency. It is best to refrain from pressing buttons you know will spark them off. If you find they are in one of their worst moods, try and keep away till they have cooled off. Avoid giving them reasons to flare up.

Difficult people are sometimes the easiest to handle - all they sometimes need is a little attention, cajoling and a boost to their ego. Try and play on their strengths and help them feel good. This will keep them happy, and keep you off their radar. If the person is question is your boss, try and appear proactive and wanting to learn. Make sure you look like you are doing the right things. It is important to be seen in the right places. This will help salvage some of your reputation.
