How To Deal With Difficult People At Work: 3 Quick Tips To Handle The Office Monsters

It's not easy to know how to deal with difficult people at work. And unfortunately, there's not just one kind of difficult person you have to contend with everyday. There's the bossy co-worker, the annoying busybody, the egoistical superior… The list goes on and on.

However, these people don't have to ruin your day. There are ways on how you can handle the situation when bumping into them. If you want to learn how to deal with difficult people at work, read on!

1) Don't take it personally.

Difficult people are difficult because of their own upbringing and experiences, and not because of you. That's the first thing you have to remember when dealing with difficult people at work.

How they act has nothing to do with you. And truth be told, they probably act that way around other people as well. So instead of letting their attitude get the better of you, separate yourself from it.

Don't take their remarks, or whatever annoying thing, they did to heart. That's just the way some people are; and sometimes, it's best to just leave them alone.

2) Focus on your own performance.

Another way on how to deal with difficult people at work is by focusing on your own performance instead. This will not only keep you from paying them too much attention (hence, minimizing the chances of saying or doing something you'll regret later on), it will also help you stand out as a good employee.

Frankly, giving difficult people at work too much attention will eat away at your own prowess. If you want to come out on top, focus all your energies into putting your best foot forward.

3) Smile.

Some people expect you to give them a certain kind of reaction. However, doing the complete opposite will absolutely stun them. And perhaps, even stun them enough to leave you alone.

The next time a co-worker tells you how unsophisticated your cellphone is compared to his, why don't you keep your face pleasant and congratulate him sincerely for owning such a fine gadget. Or the next time that someone tries to put you down, shock him with a smile and go about your own duties.

Learning how to deal with difficult people at work is a must for anyone who wants to stay sane in any industry. Let's face it. Every company has difficult people on its payroll. The only difference lies in how you deal with them. Don't let such petty things take over your work life. Expend your energies on more worthwhile things like boosting your own performance instead.

How do you deal with difficult people at work?
I just started working somewhere and there is a person there who just started attacking me on the first day. The guy is in his 30?s and is fresh out of jail (2 years) and he has been there for 3 weeks now. He has already made one person quit, just walk out of the place. The thing is that this is always a two way thing no matter what it is and I try to stay away from conflict but that?s not always easy because people like that don?t just stay away. They have that drive towards you and you can try to be a best friend with them and they will unexpectedly hit you when you don?t expect it. As of right now I try to keep this person at a distance (behind a glass wall type of thing) and don?t engage into conversations not related to work but it already seems like an issue too. I don?t want to talk to this person because it feels shady and it feels like he wants to use whatever I say against me. I don?t really understand that type of people and I have luck with particular type that seem to be somehow unsuccessful or in a difficult position in life (single father, people who don?t have enough money for them and family etc). They seem to strike at me / other people and get involved in conflict to gain something for themselves. I don?t know? I just would not do that. I don?t have people I don?t like at work without a reason (direct action or aggression towards me etc). If I do I guess I would just stay away or respect somebody who does not want to talk to me for whatever reason etc. I just can?t see myself jumping at anybody like that, but I guess it happens and it might get you in trouble too. How do you deal with this? How do you find that balance between not getting involved into conflict and not getting on that other person nerves at the same time? When I try to talk and be friendly it works against me, keeping too much distance is not good too and the person does not really want to stay away. I have a feeling that this person is going to crash and I really don?t wanna have anything to do with it but it is not that easy. How would you do it? Thanks.

How do you deal with men?
My boyfriend is so stubborn and always has to be right. It's really difficult to talk to him or get anything through to him, and he often uses guilt trips without realizing it. He's a good person, he just has the tiniest flaws that I know I can't change. So how do I work around it? How do I get him to open up to me more, how do I get him to understand my feelings, and most importantly, how the hell do I get him to stop interrupting me when I try to voice my opinions? Sometimes I just get angry...and I think that just fuels the fire. OR makes things worse. Other times I talk calmly and it seems to work. Any suggestions on how to deal with difficult people without shutting them out of your life? Sometimes we really just don't get along because we're two different people. Very different. But other times we're great together, it's just the communicating part that gets kinda frustrating.

I have used 'broken record' at work being Customer Service...Example...A person tries?
to get you to connect them to an outside phone line. ..you say.."I'm sorry, but i am UNABLE to connect you to an outside line." the person ask WHY? you say.."It is policy and I am not allowed to." the person tries to ARGUE...You, AGAIN repeat yourself...same as above. Then you just say .."i'm sorry Maam I have other calls I need to get to." then hang up. Our Supervisor told us to HANG up if they continue..Our company monitors every so many calls...It is awful what these customers try to do to people that are trying to make an honest living! We also document the angry calls and how they would NOT accept what we were telling them. Our company helps us by giving seminars on ":How to Deal with Difficult People" They are twice a year and tell you WHAT to say to these people. If they still do not comply just to hang up...we were so re leaved to be able to hang up...cuz if you don't they will go ROUND AND ROUND with you until you have to connect to the SUPERVISOR who will again go round and round with them...Then she just hangs up. Any opinions on this??????. Some places say you have to let them hang up. But here we are ALLOWED to just say.."Maam I have other calls I need to get to." and just hang up...whew!!!
