There are various causes of low self esteem that may exist in a person's life right from his childhood:
Negligence: when children are not given enough attention and are ignored for other reasons, they tend to feel less important and develop a low self esteem.
Excessive criticism: when a child is constantly made to feel that is of no use, he starts feeling depressed which results in low self esteem as the child starts feeling that he is not liked by others around him and starts taking everything in a negative way.
Influence of parents and family: this is the most important aspect as it is the parents who make the child feel special and give him guidance if he ever feels low in life. Their support and love can really boost up the child's confidence levels.
Achievements: when people work hard they expect good results but when they get no results they take this failure to heart and get depressed which may cause low self esteem.
Physical appearance: often bad looking people feel inferior when compared to the good looking ones, and due to these feelings of inferiority they try and are aloof from the rest of the social world.
Negative experience: a very bad experience of one's own or someone who was close can also alter the levels of self esteem.
Child abuse: it refers to both physical and mental abuse. Physical child abuse can be treated however mental abuse is very deep rooted and takes time to cure. This is one of the main causes of low self esteem.
